“I’ve always been in construction, when I left school I wanted to be a tree surgeon, but that didn’t happen and strangely enough there’s no history of any form of building in my family, I just decided I wanted to become a Carpenter. I laboured around a bit on building sites and then decided to go to college and qualified as a building surveyor, then went to work for Gleeson’s as a setting out engineer.
I worked on the land surveying and development of the A21 by-pass, but after a while they decided to move on to Hampshire, but as I was still young I decided to stay in this area. I then went to work at a builders merchants, in East Peckham, and by doing that I got to know lots of different builders. So I went out and worked for a builder, trained as a carpenter, moved on, got my qualifications and basically grew from there.
I went out on my own many 23 years ago, I set up the firm with my father-in-law and called it P & A Construction Ltd. A couple of years ago, after a long time researching we changed the company name to Applewood Building Services Ltd. P & A was far to common and we were being mistaken for all sorts of different businesses so it was the right thing to do, we got the new logo designed by a friend of ours and we’re really pleased with the way it looks. We only work on local projects and further away generally only for family and friends, but even now we try to just keep it local, we don’t like the travelling getting in the way of the working day. I’ve been a member of BNI for just over a year now and it’s been going fantastic.”
